Anglican Clergy and Interfaith Forum dialogue with Hastings and Bexhill Imams and Mosque members
Canon Dr Andrew Wingate, the Anglican Diocese of Chichester Interfaith Adviser, has spoken to meetings of the Hastings and District Interfaith Forum (HDIFF) on two occasions recently and undertook to encourage local Anglican clergy to participate more in interfaith relations. With the help of the Forum he approached Hastings and Bexhill Mosques to ask them to host a meeting for dialogue with Anglican clergy and members of the Interfaith Forum.
On October 5th Hastings Mosque were delighted to host around twenty visitors, including the Bishop of Horsham, three retired Anglican Bishops, several local clergy, lay people and Forum members. After some very cordial dialogue with Imam Ismail and a dozen or so mosque members the visitors observed midday prayers and were treated to a delicious Biryani lunch during which there was further lively conversation and a gift of English translations of the Qur’an.
Clergy and Interfaith participants then drove to St Mark’s Church Hall in Little Common where they were welcomed by the Rector, Rev’d Jonathan Frais, and further discussion on interfaith relations were led by Canon Andrew Wingate.
A smaller group went on to visit the fledgling Bexhill Islamic Centre in Clifford Road and were welcomed by Imam Magdi Osman, Mohamed Khan, Secretary/Trustee of the Bexhill Islamic Association and his wife, who provided yet more homemade delicacies. The visitors were able to discuss more intimately and admire the beautiful décor of the nearly completed Islamic Community Centre.
All agreed that this dialogue should be expanded and developed into the future for the benefit of good community relations and mutual understanding between faiths.
